NURTURE AGAINST PSYCHOSOMATIC DISORDERS 17 January 2006 –

PARENTING, NUTRITION AND PRIMAL CARE.

Our next conference is organised in conjunction with The International Society for Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine (ISPPM) and takes place on 17 January 2006. The conference, Generating Healthy Brains – Nutrients and Hormones in Development, will discuss the newly realised relationship between nutrition (building blocks, development and maintenance of the brain), emotions & psychology (the subsequent behaviour of that now ‘developed’ or possibly ‘under-developed’ or poorly supplied brain). As sometimes the latter is sadly the case, we are looking at what in the quaint language of evolution science in the previous century would have been called examples of ‘non-adaptive’ evolution.

This will be the first major discussion melding these two disciplines since the completion of the genome map, whilst also considering the potential quantum link between substrate (environment), ecology, nutrition, cell, DNA, organism and the higher faculties.

Psychology and Nutrition seldom meet, let alone with Genomics, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Endocrinology and Biochemistry. Can coordinating care from life’s beginning achieve most for mental health?

Context – The way our brains develop could be the greatest factor affecting our lives individually and socially. Mental and cardiovascular disorders are nearing the top of global disease. These are part of metabolic syndrome X, which also includes diabetes and obesity. They constitute a bigger burden of disease than HIV/AIDS.

Object of the conference –

  • To present molecular research and experience through psychiatry and psychotherapy, revealing the serious effects of current lifestyle on brain development.
  • To consider how to oppose these trends and promote the generation of healthy brains.
  • Outcome – A grasp of the chain of processes contributing to mental illness. An integrated picture of lifestyles and foods imperative for health that can be networked to:
    • both health professionals and the public for their self-protection
    • government and health services
    • agricultural and food industries
